The real secret to happiness: higher taxes - Ross Gittins - www.theage.com.au

Socialist lunatics.

"And yet our incomes keep growing in real terms year after year. What are we to do with the extra money? I believe the richer we get, the more of our income we devote to our pursuit of status, to buying "positional goods" - goods that, as well as doing whatever they are supposed to do, also demonstrate our position in the pecking order: flash homes in good suburbs, late-model European cars, kids attending private schools and everyone dressed in the most fashionable way."

People like this miss the point entirely. Most people work as hard as they can to better their life, not for the status it brings, but for the quality of life it affords us to live.

Socialists want to be the arbiter as to what kind of life we should live, what we need to live it, so they can decide, for us, what to do with the remainder.

I work as hard as I do so that one day I will not have to, when my children are grown, and self supportive, I expect to live a live free of the stress of work so that I can enjoy the fruits of my labor, status be damned.

The arrogance and elitism of the socialist mindset is truly astounding and ultimately dangerous for the world economy as a whole. If the sole purpose of higher taxes is to discourage work, what does that say about the entitlement programs and wealth redistribution programs that those taxes fund?
